The Hat Is Almost Bigger Than the Baby — and I Love That

I think that’s what made me stop on this one.

Sad Baby is already sitting there with those enormous watery eyes and the tiniest pout, looking like the day has gone completely wrong.

And somebody has dressed her for the occasion anyway.

The oversized pink hat has a green band, AKA lettering, a row of pearl-inspired details, a pink rose, and little ivy leaves tucked around the side. It feels wonderfully overdone for such a tiny character.

Then there’s another strand of pearl-inspired beads around her neck.

Apparently we’re sad today.

But we’re going to be elegant about it.

Pink and Green Continue All the Way Down

The outfit doesn’t stop with the hat.

The character wears a fuzzy-looking pink costume trimmed with green around the wrists and feet. Ivy motifs are scattered across the sleeves and lower portion, while a large AKA-inspired crest becomes the centerpiece of the front.

I especially like how the designers resisted making everything pink.

The green trim, ivy, hat band, and hanging strap give the softer pink areas enough contrast to stand out clearly against a bag.

Then You Notice the Tiny Feet

This keeps happening with the Sad Baby designs.

I look at the costume first.

Then the face.

And eventually I get to those two little bare feet sticking out from underneath everything.

They’re such a small part of the design, but they make the character feel much more playful. The hands are tucked close to the pearl-inspired necklace while the feet point forward, giving Sad Baby that familiar seated pose.

Combined with the worried eyebrows and little tear details beneath the eyes, the expression almost tells its own story.

Maybe she missed the meeting.

Maybe somebody touched her pearls.

We may never know.

A Closer Look at the Design

And right in the middle of all that polished pink-and-green styling?

The saddest little face imaginable.
